We were burgled last night in a complex in Clifton. The burglar(s) entered the flat from a sliding door. The flat has a completely open layout, so the living room and kitchen and bedroom are all connected. The criminal stole items from my own bedside table, took my dad's trousers and my mom's handbag, which were right next to their bed. He had to walk around the beds to do this. Upon waking at 10:00am we discovered the mess, as we had all slept through it! Outside my parents bedrooms window there was still some kind of ash, and the police said that these burglars 'blow' a gas into the room which keeps you in a deep sleep. Can anybody please share any information on this (gas) technique? Has anyone else experienced this? What gases are being used to do this and what are their effects? The whole thing really scared me. Most of all I am thankful to be alive, without physical hurt. My house in Kempton Park was virtually emptied twice, while we slept soundly. Even the dog was in a coma. Capetonians, wake up - the crime tsunami that turned Joburg into a hell-hole is coming to you.... a little bit more every day. The CA on your number plates is for Complacent Attitude... but that's going to change. The Congolese and Nigerian criminals are taking over this city... Just look at Blaauwberg... you can buy any drug on the pavements, just like in Yeoville. Need we mention Sea Point....? My perception is that there is a steady, continuous increase in crime in the mother city every month. Go buy an alarm system for your house. Get a barking dog. Get armed response. Go find out who your neighbours are. Stick up an electric fence, it'll look cute, just like all those Joburg suburban fortresses with their palisades, infra-red beams and razor wire on top of the walls. Hey, wait until you have to start barricading entire suburbs with boom gates and armed guards, like it is in Joburg, just to keep the thieving ****es out of the neighbourhood. Sorry guys, I know this is all depressing as hell, but let's face up to the fact that we are in Africa, not the most prosperous place on the planet, and we're in a country with super-high unemployment, no social support for millions of hungry people, a police force that is WAY behind the criminals, a judicial system that has just about collapsed... I moved to Cape Town 8 months ago, partially to escape the crime, grime and violence of Gauteng. It is really sad to see the inland crime episode slowly re-invent itself in this beautiful place. Gunny 30-06-2006, 08:58 PM I have it on good authority that they burn a cd and the fumes put you into a deep sleep if you awake it doesn't do much but if you asleep you wake up a few hours later with what feels like a hangover.
