I refused their baseless search - they could give no grounds whatsoever. I was doing nothing and in fact walked up to their vehicle to say hello as I thought it was two other officers that had helped me and whom I had commended for good service and who had in turn stopped me in the street to say thanks earlier that evening. So the SAPS finest wasted 80 man minutes for NO REASON whatsoever but they refuse to open cases where an actually crime (as minor as it may be ) has been committed. I did try to mention this to the incumbent CPF chair at the time but he did not take the matter further and neither did I (In hindsight I shoudl have - that was just as bad as not reporting crime). I serve on the CPF myself and thats the kind of respect I get from the Police. This incident happend some while back last year - but still......... So being friendly to the POLICE gets you nowhere it would seem!!!!! I have a healthy discontempt for the SAPS and for good reason I believe. I find the guys on the street often to be rude and non-accommodating with a poor attitude. Just the other day I called 10111 as they was a guy lying drunk in the street puking and not responding. They wanted nothing to do with the guy - despite it being a possible life threating emergency - aspiration is no joke. All they could say when we pointed out that the guy possibly needed medical attention was "Are you a medical doctor?" Well no sir I am not but at least I have slightly more compassion for a guy lying out cold in the street than you do - and further more it is your duty to act with compassion and protect those who are unable to protect themselves. In that instance I think someone from OPS got the guy to his feet and awake. But SAPS would have nothing to do with it! Further, another person I know had a incident with the SAPS who were arresting a person with what seemed like unncessary force. He was merely observing what was going on and was told to move on or face arrest. That is just plain thuggish behavior from the police which as I said I find quite typical. Arrest people who are no threat to SAPS- soft targets. Make you spend a night in jail for no reason knowing that no prosecutor is going to charge you with anything. Its just not right. I would imagine a lot of people getting arrested - whether they were genuine suspects or not have a worse time as they have less knowledge of their rights. A case in point is this crime of "Failure to comply" ask any bergie and they will tell you all about that. But they refuse to take up a case against a guy clearly up to no good.
