Passing by a non local parked vehicle in Nelson Road on Thursday evening 19
July around 21.30 while on an ONW foot patrol, I noticed some of the usual
items lay in the parked vehicle, typical items which owners leave in their
vehicles while they have a good time for an hour or three in one of our
local lekker 70 odd licenced pubs, restaurants or clubs, or homes or
businesses, items which draw the criminal element to Observatory and factor
of our high crime rate in our lovely suburb.

I reported to the OPS Controller that a jacket and a handbag, begging to be
stolen, are laying on the seat and floor of the silver Honda FES 367 GP but
that OPS should keep an eye around the area, and suggested that the owner/s
probably being at the Lion Corner pub, should be contacted before it is
stolen.

Guarenteed, should a needy onlooker have passed by that vehicle, another
'theft out of motor vehicle' incident would have taken place, never sure if
it would get reported to SAPS because it is too much trouble, and easier to
drive off and have the damage repaired via insurance claims etc, etc.

The ONW have suggested numerous times for residents or businesses to ask
their visitors/patrons, before they get too comfortable settling down, to
please go and check and remove any exposed items off the seat, floor,
dashboard or gear-lever arch of their vehicles, before it is stolen.

But alas, more security, more relaxed, more crime, more complaints, more
talk, bla bla - another crime. What does one do, if you have little - you
look after it - but if you have much, ag los dit maar daar, ne?
