At around 4 am this morning, Saturday 28 July 2012, I noticed a white Avanza cruising slowly through Robins Road from Rochester to Polo, and it proceeded down Polo into Dove Street, turned up Rochester and turned right into Robins again towards Kipling Street. It turned around in Kipling Street and came back along Robins and parked near the corner of Rochester Road. I hid behind a Bakkie which was parked in front of 44 Robins and kept eye on the vehicle having switched its lights off. I called on OPS Mobile 19 on the ONW two way radio to draw near, but not to break cover, and noticed the driver of the Avanza eventually disembark and walked into Rochester Road but crossing the road out of my sight.
After a minute or so the driver got back into the Avanza, this happened three times over each time after a short delay inside his vehicle. OPS Mobile 19 had since drawn closer and parked halfway up Rochester Road out of sight behind other parked vehicles. The SAPS reaction vehicle unfortunately was attending to some other matter and could not investigate, my cellular call to the Woodstock SAPS was worthless in that no SAPS assistance was rendered. After the third time embarking the Avanza, the vehicle drove off down Rochester Road and turned left into Lower Main to Salt River. Giving the go for OPS Mobile 19 to get the registration number and any description of the vehicle and the number of occupants he quickly followed down and radioed back the registration number as *CF 187745, a white Avanza, two black occupants.* While I commenced checking around as to what the driver could have been up to and came to the conclusion that he must have targeted a white Nissan Hi-rider CY ....... which was parked on the right side of Rochester Road just below Robins Road. The Nissan's drivers door was unlocked but no tampering of the ignition key or wires could be seen. I assumed the Avanza driver was trying a bunch of keys possibly returning to his vehicle each time for more keys to be handed him by the passenger. Being watchful and hiding, I noticed the Avanza come down Rochester from the Main Road but continued past and turned right into the Lower Main toward Observatory. OPS Mobile vehicles were alerted to the sighting of the Avanza. The Premier Security vehicle came to check past me and soon reported the Avanza stopped on the Robins corner of Scott Road for a short while, it then went up Scott and turned left towards Mowbray, and was not sighted again. I remained until 5 am hiding in an alleyway opposite the park in Rochester Road in case the Avanza came back to finish whatever he was up to, met a couple of revelling residents having parked their car and entering their home, but soon left as it became a bit cold. The SAPS CSC Officer was alerted concerning the activity of the Avanza, and that it be positively checked out by SAPS as a very suspicious vehicle.
