On Saturday evening at 7pm four young white women had parked their hired car near the corner of Strubens & Lower Wrench roads to drop off one them. The driver switched of the ignition and got out to say good bye. Three young black men, one very noticeable in a trilby hat, came around the corner and saw the keys were in the car. The two remaining women seeing trouble hastily jumped out. The man in the drivers seat obviously couldn't drive as he struggled to get the car into gear. This all happened within a few seconds. One of the women opened the back car door and managed to grab her bag. The car revving loudly, tore off swerving around the corner past stunned onlookers out side the Model Cafe. And at high speed, in a low gear tore dangerously down Lower Wrench Road. Turned right into Willow road. Back into Strubens rd and over the N2 bridge. One of the local residents jumped into his car and tried to chase them, but they got away. OBSID was called. OBSID and the Police arrived about ten minutes after the incident and took statements. They then spent about two hours cordoning off Strubens road with yellow tape! Apparently a police photographer came to take a picture of the crime scene! It all seemed too late and rather pointless. I have not seen OBSID foot patrols in this area of Strubens Rd and Lower Wrench and rarely see the van which seems on occasion to park in the shade near the N2 bridge! There was a break-in in Milner Road about two weeks ago and on a number of occasions recently drunk and very noisy groups of people have been up and down Strubens road in the early hours of the morning. This is the main route to the Mowbray taxi rank, and a thoroughfare that needs more security patrol.
