My 74-year-old mother Monica is fighting for her life after she was mugged
in front of her house in Trill Road.
She under went an emergency operation to stem subdural bleeding which had
put so much pressure on her brain that she slipped into a coma. The
operation had successfully removed the pressure, but we will only start
knowing the extent of damage in the next 24 hours.
Last night, my mom returned from a bookclub meeting and was accosted by a
mugger, probably a desperate junkie. She put up a fight in which she
sustained a blow to her cheek before her attacker fled empty-handed. I took
her to hospital and she was discharged after a couple of hours. We decided
that she would spend the night at our house. She went to bed in relatively
good spirits, laughing at funny bits of the incident. She read before she
fell asleep. This morning we couldn't rouse her.
