On Saturday morning our 92-year old neighbour came to us saying that
someone had broken into her house and stolen some money (which seems really
unfair as she literally has nothing else to steal). The thieves gained
access by removing the glass from a big stoep window: carefully removing
all the beading and removing the glass intact. Once inside they pried open
another window between the stoep and the house and partially removed the
burglar bars on the inside.

What's really concerning about this is that the thieves obviously spent a
considerable amount of time removing the glass (it took me more than an
hour to replace the glass), less than 2m from the pavement - there is only
a short wall between the garden and the street. How come nobody noticed
someone beavering away at 2am in the morning ?

My 2 cents worth is that a foot patrol would have been more likely to pick
up this activity - no amount of CCTV cameras will detect someone working
behind some bushes, so I share the sentiments expressed by some other
members of this group that the move to CCTV seems to have been hasty, and
possibly at the expense of our safety.

Regards

Anton
