Thanks Andrew for posting the article to us. Yes, praise should be given, which mostly we often neglect to do, whether to SAPS Woodstock, or to our own OPS patrollers in Observatory.
I assume the two Constables were Ontong and Berry and not Barry? I recall there were two Constables Ontong, brothers in fact. The younger was assigned to Woodstock and the older to Observatory, if not mistaken. However, all three constables are no rookies, they know their 'Woods' and their 'Obs', in fact they know the whole of the Woodstock precinct, all four Sectors, probably better than what we may think! And so it should be, that's their job, after all, they are Policemen. I have been fortunate to have driven with them in their fast 'Squad Cars'; waited on street corners for an unsuspecting hoodlum; been inside the many pubs and clubs following hot on their tracks as they carry out liquor licence inspections or a drug searches etc; stood alongside them at routine road blocks or under the Woodstock bridge squalor of hideouts; chatted to them when passing by in their patrol vans, or just listened to them at so many meetings. Yes, they are good Policemen, the best, under paid, long hours of work, slow to be promoted, moved from pillar to post at the drop of a hat, faces danger in so many ways on so many days or nights. They are good quality men, stood the test of time and gained much from it, good and strong leaders to be called Sector Commanders and stand in for Observatory at times, or formed part of operational teams sorting out the unsorted. Often, if it was up to them, they would have done more in a given situation or gone the second mile for us in Observatory too. No, they are not perfect, yes, there are warts, maybe they didn't - but this time they did! Yes - Well Done Guys! - Bravo Zulu! You have done Woodstock SAPS proud. Take care!
