Steven as promised here's what the "expert" had to say *possible but unlikely.* His email is below, but think much of this is beyond this forum. _________________________________________________________________________________
*This is possible, the link to the research paper (http://s3.eurecom.fr/docs/ndss11_francillon.pdf <http://s3.eurecom.fr/docs/ndss11_francillon.pdf>) is valid.I read the paper and its all good science :-)For some other info see the wiki for Keeloq which is a popular system for cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeeLoq <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeeLoq>Note that they say that 'Replay Attacks' (which your article is a form of) is possible and the wiki does not offer any further info on this. The chapter on 'cryptanalysis' mentions 2 weeks and 100 days for brute force entry so this is not something for the average car thief to stand around and wait for - though if some car manufacturers have weaknesses in there implementationsthis could be a lot shorter. The chapter on 'side-channel attacks', though interesting is an unlikely method as its not likely that the average thief with a 'black box'is going to have the systems master key - but the most interesting words in this chapter are "distance up to 100 meters" which meansthat 'black box' does not have to be too sophisticated to receive and retransmit the signal. It only needs to boostthe signal enough to get it around the walls, windows etc to the remote and in return good enough to receive the (weak) signal fromthe remote again (remember the signal needs to go both ways) and boost that a bit for the car to receive.Check out the references and links at the bottom of the page for more interesting info.Note that at least 1 link is to a site which says such stories are a hoax so there is a lot of B.S. but also some truth,as always on the internet its tricky to determine which is which.* On 19 April 2015 at 19:03, 'Suzette Swart' via The Observatory Neighbourhood Watch <[email protected]> wrote: > This is how cars have been dtolen in Century City too. > > Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android > <https://overview.mail.yahoo.com/mobile/?.src=Android> > ------------------------------ > *From*:"[email protected]" <[email protected]> > *Date*:Sat, 18 Apr, 2015 at 18:15 > *Subject*:RE: [obsnw] Car remote control > > very, very interesting! > thanks for sharing. > > Original email: > ----------------- > From: Stefan [email protected] > Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2015 16:56:12 +0200 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [obsnw] Car remote control > > > Hi > > I just found this article and thought I forward it to you bcs. the same > thing happened last year twice with my > Audi A4 here in Cook Str.
