Thanks Graham, Hannes is looking into it as well, he was with us on patrol. It is not only the Caltex site, that little squatter camp is also of concern, and that one has been brewing for years. With the potential slum being built at 41 Scott/1Wesley (they're sub-dividing into 10 self-sufficient units) we have hit them as soon as they are noticed. If I'm not mistaken, the C3 reporting system allows for problem buildings to be reported. I'm going to try anyway. :-)

Hi Jenny,

At an OBSID AGM awhile back, JP Smit told us we could (with OBSID's help), get properties like that listed as problem properties with council.

The onus is then on the properties owner to close/secure or relet to suitable tenants to remove the security problem.

Maybe we could discuss this with Hannes, and ask him to investigate what we need to do to get action on this?

Cheers,
Graham

    Hi Alida

Thanks for that, it's important to gather as much as we can to
support these concerns. I have no idea who owns it now, but you
have reminded me that perhaps I must try and contact the council
to do something about it. It's all starting to fall into place
now - I report drug dealers daily for trading outside La Verte. They have to come from somewhere and it seems an ideal spot for
    them to live.

At one stage I seem to recall hearing that Rawson also wanted to
develop the Caltex site, they are responsible for that ugly block
of flats on the corner of Polo and Main.

At the very least we can ask questions. When Spar opens, I'll go
and see the manager and find out if he or she knows who owns that
property. To me it is a situation we should all be concerned about.

    Thanks Jenny

The drug dealer we keep reporting on dealing in Cook Street, is
always seen on foot coming down Polo, turning right into Cook,
waiting for the car to pull up, then walking back up Polo when
done. As far as I know, he was once followed into the block of
flats on the corner of Main and Polo.

Indeed, what to do and where to start on all your points. With
Spar opening at the top of Polo, I was hoping the stretch,
especially the Caltex garage property, will get a facelift. What
is happening with the property since both businesses moved out?

While we were patrolling the other night, we decided to have
a look at the old Caltex garage which is on Main Road between
Rochester and Polo Roads. I don't know how long it has been
abandoned now, but there are squatters living in the
buildings. I doubt if they have running water so one can
only imagine what it looks like in there. We also had
reports of people sleeping in the huge petrol holding tanks
which have been removed from the ground and are on top. We
found a black male in there who had put newspaper on the
windows as curtains, and he was very aggresive towards us.

Then walking back down Polo Road, we had another look at the
little plot wedged between the Caltex garage and the first
houses on Donne Street from Polo Road side, opposite 65 Polo
Road as per map below, there is a now sizeable squatter camp
that has been there over the years. I don't know who owns
the property but those shacks did not get passed by any
building inspector. I might bet on that.

Diagonally over the road from there,on the corner of Polo and
Main Roads, is a block of flats above the Duchess clothing
store. This block of flats is renowned for drug dealers I
        heard recently.

I know this is not a crime situation yet but it certainly is
a fertile breeding ground for one and has the potential of
another Trump Towers. Do we want that?
I don't think so, as of this date, Trump Towers is still a
problem that we don't seem to be able to get rid of. Does
anyone have any idea what we can do and how to go about it?
