N N was a few minutes early for work and before ringing the bell took a moment
to check her phone.
A man approached and said he needed help then told her there was no escape and
nocked her on the head with a small black bag that contained a heavy object
like a brick.
She dropped her cell phone and he grabbed it and ran. She shouted and ran after
him.
I heard it and saw the tall thin black man with short black hair running very
fast down Wrensch Road wearing a red jacket and dark trousers.
I chased in my car, saw people come out who gave her attention and confirmed he
had gone down the subway.
I went via Station Road to Lower Wrensch to see if I could track him in the
direction he was going and called OBSID on my phone.
I encountered an OBSID van who seemed to know about it already and they thought
he had gone towards Station Road. I checked the subway and was told he had left
his red jacket and the bag with the heavy object in the subway.
I drove down Strubens and back onto Liesbeek thinking I may track him and as I
came to the N2 bridge caught sight of him crossing from the weir over the mound
or raised walkway berm and down the other side towards Wild Fig and N2. He was
now in a white short sleeve golf shirt with soft collar and still with dark
long pants. He was clearly the same person. Tall and moving with speed and
grace yet cautious as he ducked not to be too visible.
I turned onto the onramp towards N2 outbound then lost him as he was too close
to the side or behind the trees or back to the river?
I eventually got back to Little Mowbray but could not see him again. I updated
my report to OBSID
After taking N N to the doctor and chemist (she had a bad knock on the head),
we came back via Liesbeek Parkway again and we saw police vans next to the
river.
We stopped and found they had picked up about nine young men who were being
taken back to Woodstock PS. They said they also saw the man we were chasing and
he disappeared ‘through the river’.
We had a look at them but did not see the one responsible for the specific
mugging.
We went to Woodstock to lay a charge and see if they had any photos to identify
but after a long time of waiting and writing the report were requested to come
back again on Wednesday.
It is clear that the fast getaway was achieved down Lower Wrensch and past the
gap between the pool and houses, across Liesbeek Parkway, across the weir over
the river and behind the ‘berm’ into the sluth that reaches the river under the
bridge.
There are lots of hideouts and places to drop things to come back and fetch
later.
We need to get this gap next to the pool closed with a fence and have some
camera on the subway and Strubens Road!
