Hi Ronel & Others, , Just reposting under new heading on the previous post on our Google Group, the heading which is a bit confusing and left your email out
Ronel wrote on the ONW website: *I would like to report that I got held at gunpoint 3 weeks ago in Roman Road. It was 18:30 right in front of my house just when I got out of my car. Is it possible for OBS Safety to improve and perhaps to get more white Vans to patrol the streets? What number can I dial if I am scared at night before I park my car for someone to just see that I am safe in my house? This wasn't even late at night! OBS is such a lovely area to live BUT we need more security. Kindly confirm receipt of my message. Thank you. Kind regards,* Answer from Jenny Calder the ONW Secretary on 14/08/2015 at 03:14 Hi Ronel I'm sorry to hear about your horrible experience. I urge you to report it to the police though because even though it may seem to late to you, something you may tell them could just be the link they need to make a successful arrest and case. I am going to post some safety tips here as well, but I also urge you to join the neighbourhood watch, even if you feel you cannot do patrols. We need to be vigilant right now. Some tips that were offered at the last meeting were that the times of these hits is usually between 15h30 and 19h30 and it is usually when people are returning home from work. Be aware of your surroundings when you approach home and if something doesn't feel right don't stop there. Be alert every time you leave the house as well. It's also not a bad idea to get some mace spray. OBSID can be called at 021 447 1066 for reporting concerns and suspicions (they log everything in an incidents book) and will respond to your concerns by despatching a vehicle if one is available at the time. For more urgent concerns, like what happened to you, the SAPS van (there is always at least one in the area) it is 082 908 5525 or you could call the Sector Manager, Const. Mark Berry at 082 302 5436. Or try 10111 (for emergencies Const Berry suggested this would be the first number to call but I know they can't always answer). I also suggest you join the neighbourhood watch, every little bit of vigilance and reporting of suspicious behaviour helps. It is also a good way to become better neighbours and look out for each other. I am the Secretary of Observatory Neighbourhood Watch and will email the forms to you and should you decide to join, please scan them back to me. Our security in Observatory comprises three elements which work closely together and it's success is dependent on the residents getting involved. There is the neighbourhood watch, OBSID and SAPS. No one of them can work independently and be truly effective, we all need each other. I will ask Frank Schuitemaker to have a look and see if he can find a local whatsapp group for you to join as well. There is a Control Room number:* 021 447 1066 <021%20447%201066>* to call and ask that a vehicle meet you at your address when you get home. Just ask the Controller who answers the Phone to dispatch a vehicle to your street address and ask that they stand there whilst you drive in to your property. Again i must ask that if you have ADT/ Premier or any other security company who has an response or alarm contract with you, that they also be contacted to assist you in that way. WE here at OBSID will try to assist Obs Community where possible. There is no existing WhatsApp Group in Roman Street but will contact the Station Road one to suggest extending this group to include Roman Road. Alternatively you could consider a new group in Roman Road, please feel free to contact me for assistance. Roads where residents are active and communicate suspicious persons and/or vehicles to each other and also inform Saps and Ops reduces crime not only to their road but possibly also to the whole of Observatory. Below you will find also the Obs emergency numbers and suggest that you join this Google Group and our facebook.com/obswatch page to remain informed. We just warned this morning residents through a video to be particularly alert when arriving home.
