Hats off to constable Mark Berry, our redoubtable sector commander, for his massive contribution to the closure of the drug club Mezani Lounge.
We have received the good news from the Liquor Authority today that the Liquor Licencing Tribunal has temporarily suspended Mezani's liquor licence in terms of Section 71 of the Liquor Act, pending a further hearing in terms of Section 20 into the fitness of the liquor licence holder to trade in liquor. The date for the Section 20 hearing has not been established yet. It is expected that Daniel Lossy, the liquor licence holder, will be declared unfit to hold a licence after that hearing, unless his lawyers pressurise the Tribunal into disregarding the interests of the community. If Mezani trades at any time over the next few months, it will be in defiance of the Liquor Tribunal's ruling. If anyone sees them open, please take a picture with your cell phone so that it can be submitted to the LA, who will use it as further evidence in the upcoming Section 20 hearing. Mark, together with const. Chadwick Adams, has done months of grueling police work to build a case before the Liquor Tribunal that Mezani was in the grips of a destructive drug trade. The work involved confronting dangerous and aggressive criminals, conducting numerous drug raids and reacting to some hectic complaints, including a horrible rape at the premises, and continuously suffering vile abuse from the defiant management and drug dealers at Mezani -- most of this while we were sleeping. The work also involved hours of paperwork to convince the Liquor Authority that Mezani was a problem. Thank you Const Berry and Adams!
