There should be some way that these accommodation facilities should produce
guidelines for their lodgers and they should also contribute to extra security
for the general area to get on top of this before its history!

Subject: Re: [obsnw] Oxford Road Forced Entry Armed House Robbery

Good morning Barbara,

Thanks for your suggestions but can't disclose details without owners
permission but it's between Station and Trill.

The owner called me for Police follow up, they rent out the front section of
the house, often to foreign students.

I'm aware of the backlash crime can have on the arrival of foreign students,
various Dutch universities also stopped placing students in Obs years ago
resulting in 5 places closing down.

Backpackers, lodges etc used to have an association sharing info to inform
students. Ideally this body should have representation on the ONW, Obsid Safety
Committee, Obs CPF and OCA to strategies the overall concern together with all
the role players including Saps.

Suggest to get in touch with the owners of Green Elephant and Riverview Lodge,
both who are pro-active in matters of safety in Observatory.

You most likely provide students with emergency numbers. Perhaps let them
download the ONW Obsdir on their phones and bookmark it obs.org.za/obsdir

Just as a side note, many households primary source of income is
accomodation for international students. Two USA universities have made a
decision not to place students in OBS due to an incident on OSIAN Road. It
will be a disaster to chase away the rest of the market through crimes such as
these.

In some cases the students are to blame because they lack the discretion to
understand walking home drunk, showing their phones in public and failing to
lock gates etc, walking home alone at night. Thinking all people
are”friendly”.

But news travels fast and increased crime of this nature will affect arrivals
in Cape Town.

Just some facts, my Lodge received 100 students in the past 12 months. Each
students budgets approximately R20000.00 a month for their average 3 month
stay. They spend the majority of this on accomodation, hire cars and the main
tourist activities around Cape Town. This is a total value of R2 million.
This supports the local eateries, transport, and small businesses. It brings
up the value of OBS as a destination, not to mention the property values.

What is the police strategy to stamp out crime in OBS – because without them
being an effective force, it will only get worse.

  Regards,

  Barbara

Just food for thought. These students need to be protected as far as
possible. [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of

  Dear Obsies,

At 04:30 Three coloured males of about 1.8m height, average build broke down
the driveway gates, damaging the motor mechanism. Climbed over a fence on the
side of the house, smashed a glass window and forced off the burglar bars.
Entered the room of an absent French student tenant and likely stole her laptop
and other electronics (still finding out).

When confronted by the other 3 or 4 woken up other foreign and one Zulu
female student tenants they threatened them with knifes and shouted they will
shoot them (no fire arm was however seen).

Nobody was hurt but needless to mention that the ladies were severely shocked
and traumatised by this incident. This is why we didn't manage to get a
detailed description of the suspects or get away car or other modus operandi. A
hat from one of the perps was found on the property and hopefully this may help
Obsid to identify the suspects from CCTV footage.

This report was made possible due to an active WhatsApp Group which reported
some 8 incidents in a few days in Oxford Road alone. You to can become part of
a WhatsApp Group as not to be alone, neighbour are there to assist you. Read
the ObsLife September article here.

Thank you all for reporting each incident to both Ops and Cops no matter how
small, these will all add up to making our village a better and caring village
for all.
