Thanks for bringing this up Jonah, if it's possible to hold a big in-person event, that would be very exciting! I'll be super interested to hear what others think.
A couple of thoughts: I think it will be difficult to balance the tension between 1) the need to start early/invest huge time & energy over a long period and 2) the ongoing uncertainty of life in a pandemic. But if a person/group has a vision and can commit to seeing it through (see FOSS4G 2021 motto "Come hell or high water"), *and do it soon*, then I'm sure many of us in the community will be willing to pitch in. Re: a simultaneous in-person event and local hubs: the people most likely to step up as hub organisers might also be inclined to attend a regional in-person event, um, in-person. It may be hard to muster enough volunteer energy to do both at the same time. Another possibility: do a big regional event and broadcast live content for anyone who wants to join remotely (including hubs if they're inclined), and also provide support to local groups who want to run a local event at a different time. I could see FOSS4G Perth running on a completely different date from a regional event. Whatever happens, I'd be interested in working with local organisers to help develop their own plans.
