Is data=writeback unsafe? Perhaps this is the same issue I'm having. It sounds about right. Things freeze up for a short period, and then resume again. He was using 2.6.23.1 in that, and I was using 2.6.24.something. I don't get those issues at all on 2.6.22-19.
