Dear all
We are a small group working at UNI-C, The Danish IT centre for
Education and Research, on a project allowing blind people to work as
well on linux based systems as they are currretly doing on MS Windows
based systems.
As screenreader we use ORCA, which is now performing very well,
competitive with JAWS for Windows. But we have trouble to find a
document reader for linux in the same class as OMNIPAGE for Windows.
Ocropus combined with tesseract seems however to possess very
promising points, especially when analyzing documents with simple
layouts. When analyzing more tangled documents, as is usually the case
for letters from public authorities and other institutions and
companies, ocropus still lacks some capabilities.
We must admit that we have only used the command, "ocroscript
recognize document.png > document.html" in our tests. If other more
specilized commands are available, please could somebody inform us.
Otherwise we might be interest ourselves to participate in improving
the layout engine in ocropus to make it a better competor to omnipage.
Best regards, looking forward seeing some comments on our case,
Wojciech Owczarz
