iulib can do morphology *directly* on run-length encoded image data. It is awesomely fast at that. Additionally, iulib is capable of operating directly on packed binary images (i.e. where a 32-bit word contains 32 binary pixels). I don't know about OpenCV specifically, but I think those are unique characteristics that make iulib attractive.
