Hey Folks,

I am coming from a few different areas
* Geogeek involved with FOSS for geomatics
* Ubuntu user and long time Linux convert
* heavy user of FOSS tools
* python scripting (always learning)
* willing to bash the CLI but love it when a project matures to a
simple GUI
* Willing advocate of mature FOSS projects that can solve real world
solutions for the masses
* Owner of a couple of SVN repos (mostly python stuff)
* general hacker to make a tool do what I want
* A willing beta tester and bug reporter (tend to play this role a lot
at work). This is not what I consider pleasurable though.

Where I am coming from in relation to this project.
I keep a lot of hand written notes. I collect lots of receipts and try
to type them in, but never get around to it. Sound familiar?

I want to merge my analogue world with the digital by scanning my
notes so I can have digital to-do lists. I want to scan my receipts to
track consumption of goods. I want to scan my bills so I can extract
data such as cell phone usage and most called numbers. And of course
mapping everything out.

I am interested in building a user friendly GUi using Python and some
GUI lib like GT, TkTcl, GTK, etc. I am also interested in geolocating
scanned materials by looking for location keywords.

Right now I have a stack of business cards. I want to scan them,
extract the data and populate an address book.

I am also interested in extracting geo-related data from scanned
materials like addresses, cities, countries etc.

So the first step was to find a library. I tried out a few like:
* Tesseract
* GOCR
* OCRAD

This test confirmed my suspicions that there is large gap in maturity
between projects (http://www.mscs.dal.ca/~selinger/ocr-test/).

Opus uses Tesseract and adds layout, which I like.

I am also interested in learning how to build packages for Ubuntu. I
am working on a few others> Once I get the hang I would like to help
out where I can if this project helps me get closer to my goal.

What I am not:
* A trained programmer
* An image specialist (although have worked a lot with satellite
imagery in the geo world and am an amateur digi-photographer)
* A Heavy code producer

So, does this sound like an OK match with the project?
