Jason, 

currently I am working at my OCR graphical user interface 'jpg2book', too. It
is a lightweight application written in python and gtk. It should simplify batch
processing of many scanned/photographed pages with the approach of "load
folder,  select operations & click apply", somewhat similar to Synaptic or
Gparted. (As for now, the selection of cropping regions has to be done manually
before processing, however.) 

The image preprocessing is accomplished using Imagemagick and the Fred's
script Whiteboard. The OCR options are tesseract and cuneiform as for now. (The
format I use the most now is the JPEG output, however. I will be
happy to cooperate on OCRopus integration.

Today or tomorrow I am going to publish the program at Sourceforge.
