This xml read function is extremely limited, and is basically only for
octave variables already saved with the corresponding xmlwrite
function.. There was quite a bit of discussion on the lists about the
various XML options for Octave available, and this was summarized on the
Wiki at

I believe that there was an xml toolbox for Octave written since then
based on xerces that is available at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave-xmltools/

and more information on this toolbox is at
