f2c does not support automatic arrays; g77 does, as do most other f77
compilers (and all f90+). I'm fairly used to automatic arrays;
however, if there is serious need to compile the package using f2c, I
think I can transform the code to use external workspaces only,
at the cost oflesser readability. I guess you're compilingon windows,
right? I think there were also other F77 compilers for Windows freely
available, like Watcom Fortran 77...
(Btw. on my list of very-long-term TODOs is "try extending f2c to
support automatic arrays")
