I have no idea what happened.  Apparently I committed an old version
back in November, cannot explain why...

Anyway, it failed for me too, and now it does not any more (with the
latest version I just committed).  Please test it with
 test pdist
it should pass all tests.

By the way, what is

  max (magic(3), 1)

supposed to do?  I thought that it would create a row vector after
finding the maximum of each column, but on 3.1.54 it returns the maximum
between 1 and the 3x3 matrix.  The help string is ambiguous in this
respect.  Is the current behaviour correct?
