I don't know this function well enough to determine if your patch is
correct or not. The patch seems rather involved to me (you change
practically every line in the file); would it be possible to simplify
it? If not, would it at least be possible to provide a patch with fewer
changes (e.g. you shouldn't be changing the license)?
