I'm afraid you'd better wait for a new package version, sorry.
Java-1.2.7 is incompatible with octave-3.4.0.
The next version (probably 1.2.8) has been much improved anyway (dynamic
& static (to some extent) classpath; Matlab compatible function calls;
some graphics dialogs; several bug fixes; documentation / manual; code
cleanup; adaptation to specific internal octave-3.4.0 calls; etc).

I got it installed here on Mandrivalinux 2010.2 w Octave-3.4.0 & Sun
Java, AFAICS it runs OK there; but it needs more testing on
Linux/OpenJDK and Windows/Sun Java. In the latter it still fails to install.

May I ask what you want to do with it? Because, if you need it for the
io pkg, you'd better wait for a new version of that as well (I'll have
to comb through the spreadsheet scripts for a last time and clean up
some functions that are now in core octave, hopefully this or next week).

If you are willing to help test a new java pkg version (for Linux only
at the moment) I can send you the package as I have it running, but
you'll have to promise to give feedback whether it works OK and duly
report all problems you'll encounter :-)
Just let me know.

Best wishes,

Philip
