The ALSA (aaudio-0.2.0.tar.gz) package only had some minor updates but the JACK package (jaudio-0.2.0.tar.gz) is new. With JACK one can (simultaneously) connect to inputs/outputs of the soundcard(s) but also to various signal analyzers (jaaa, meterbridge), realtime filter engines (brutefir) etc. That is, JACK allows several clients to connect to the same port(s) so one can, for example, record data from channel 1 on the sound card and run a realtime spectrum analyzer on channel 1 at the same time. JACK is also available for MacOS X and Windows so it may work on those platforms too (untested). If you find any problems just send me a mail.
