I have also faced some resource limitations when running 3.4.3/3.4.2 on an XP-SP3 machine (specially with fltk graphics), however, I could install packages. The machine I have tried is equipped with 4G memory and I have tweaked its boot.ini to have more memory user apps (search the net for - boot.ini 3gb xp). I don't know if this tweak is relevant for machines with 2G.
