I don't have the latest development version of Octave.  Could someone 
with a fairly up-to-date version please confirm this works properly?

figure ('visible', 'off');
plot([1:50]);
figure ('visible', 'on');

I'm not seeing a graph when the figure becomes visible.  Further issuing

figure ('visible', 'off');
figure ('visible', 'on');

causes a new blank figure to appear.
