Welcome to the project! In case you want to help with some of the existing issues you can just let us know on which task you are working. If you would like to start with an easy task I'd recommend having a look at this issue which should be quite easy to fix but is very annoying: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ODFTOOLKIT-386 (Project doesn't build with Java 8).
