-native packages are built for use by OE on the host machine when
compiling. Hence they're i686.
Did you install all of the prerequisites for OE? Like, say, gcc?

Yes: gcc-4.1.0.
For all others, I've recent version of each one (python-2.4.2,
patch-2.5.9, m4-1.4.4, monotone-0.25, subversion-1.2.3-r2, ...)
I forgot to mention, (but don't think it's the problem): I work in a
chrooted environment.
