Summary: VFAT CF on collie - major filesystem corruption
Product: Openembedded

Platform: ARM
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: critical
Priority: P3
Component: Distributions

Something is absolutely wrong with 3.5.4 on collie. I had nothing but problems
after flashing
http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4/images/collie/opie-image-3.5.4-collie.initrd.bin
and
http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4/images/collie/zImage-58-6
The flashing process went fine. There was just an odd oddity ;-) here and
there like the password for altboot not being shadowed and some error I forgot
to make a note of above that line. Overall, the impression was already "not
yet 100% polished".
I was getting really suspicious when updating via the package manager over WLAN
would frequently hang the machine. I reflashed a couple of times and decided
to only download the ipk and put them on the CF card. That also crashed.
Therefore I aborted and reflashed once again.
Then I decided to put the ipk from the deploy directory of my OE directory onto
my CF card. I then wanted to move the files to a different directory (move
from CF to CF). That took a long time, literally over night. In the process,
it borked my CF card which made me lose some non-important files. The card was
mounted ro after I put it back in. Scandisk on a Win computer said the card
was fine but could not read some directories. I used dosfsck and fixed the
problems, losing the files in the process.
Getting worried about my backup from Sharp ROM now, I made a major mistake. I
moved instead of copied the backup files from the SD to the CF to put it onto
my Thinkpad laptop which has a CF reader. The CF card had about 175 megs free
space. The backups where around 50 megs. The process was aborted due to
"insufficient space". After that "ls /media/card" showed zero files. the
backup files were gone from the SD card. My Thinkpad can read the files that
were on the CF before this just fine. dosfsck shows no errors.
The backup files to reflash to Sharp and copy over my contacts etc. are in the
orkus. I am absolutely pissed that something so major as this can happen on
OZ. The card has never made any problems before.
