It's related to available RAM, but it isn't a simple function of machine
size.  It also depends on the software you're running, the likely
availability of swap, and the tradeoffs you want to make between
performance, short-term memory efficiency and long-term memory
efficiency.  Since this is basically a policy issue it seems like
something that should be driven by the DISTRO.
