IMHO it's much better to let users deal with spam on their own so
that the list admins don't have to spend their time administering yet
another spam system and making sure that it is kept up to date.
To each their own, but that just seems inelegant to me. IMHO given mail
propagation for a list involves duplication, it makes the most sense to
stem the junk as close to its source as possible, otherwise instead of
one junk filter, you need as many as you have subscribers. I personally
don't like the inefficiency this implies.
