Yes. You can now configure the system to store incoming emails as
CommunicationEvents with attachments as Content. The mail container
can be configured to process incoming emails, mark them as seen, and
then send them to MCA's for processing. The storeIncomingEmail
service can be used to store an email as a CommunicationEvent. The
CRM application will then take them and put them into an inbox for
you as pending activities.
It is not perfect, though - the parsing of body text is good, but the
parsing of image attachments seems to be flaky.

What do you mean by "bypassed"? Sorry, and what do Cyrus and
Procmail do?

Well i suppose 'bypassed' is the wrong word perhaps. I was just
curious
as to why people were discussing installing Java-based mail servers
when
there are normally other mail servers in existence that can be used. I
guess that some may not have sufficient control of existing mail
servers.
As BJ Freeman intimated, Cyrus is the leading OSS IMAP server.
Procmail
is the leading OSS mail rules processing software.
Are we saying, btw, that incoming mail is now able to be tied up with
CommunicationEvent?
