This is something I just wrote up in response to a question originally on this mailing list, so I'm forwarding the reply here too.

Frank,

Chances are no one answered because this is a fairly regular question that is answered every so often, so there is information in the mailing lists and even an old document on ofbiz.org that addresses the topic:

http://incubator.apache.org/ofbiz/docs/GettingAndUsingOFBiz.pdf

This is the first link in the "Download OFBiz" section of the left bar of the ofbiz home page, and there are additional resources below it in that section.

That document refers to opentaps for now, as for a long time we weren't doing releases regularly so that was the only "distribution" available. Once the new release is ready we will be updating that.

Hopefully we'll get the infrastructure transition going after the Dec 20 Apache Board vote on OFBiz acceptance, if it goes well of course. We will probably be doing the branch and release in early January.

In general the release isn't a big deal. We are doing some testing and fixing of things before it, but the project simply does not have resources to do a full QA pass so the real value of a release is not that it is "perfect" but that for people who want something stable they can work together to get bugs back-patched to that version without new features going in that might mess things up or cause data model changes, etc. In other words, as time goes on that branch will get better and the upgrade on that branch should be trivial.

So yes, definitely go with the latest from SVN for now. I don't see any real reason to wait, and you can join the release testing and maintenance effort when that gets underway if you're interested in using it.

David,

I submitted questions below last week. Still no response. I assume it
somewhat difficult to answer these questions right now.

Still, we would like to install an initial ofbiz version on some server
in order to give various business units/departments (POS, operations,
finance, marketing) an idea of what ofbiz looks like and can do for us.

One of my IT managers supposed to wait with this step until the first
graduated release is out. But, I would like to know when this would
happen. If this needed longer, we would go ahead pulling the latest SVN
version.

BTW, we have contacted a vendor (www.netk5.com) which has ofbiz
implementation experience in China. According to them, they even
integrated ofbiz (e-Commerce) with a China local finance/accounting
package.

Thanks for your comments.
Best, Frank

Now that the incubator has positively voted for ofbiz' graduation, when
do you think the graduation will eventually happen?

Furthermore, when could we expect the first graduated release?

Would you, for new commercial implementations, recommend using the
current SVN release?

Thanks, Frank
