Check out "home automation" on the web There's a whole bunch of
stuff on controlling houses with standards, protocols, controllers etc Which
is probably overkill for switching an electric blanket on :-) Not sure if
the US standard is applicably/compatible with NZ (probably not, but the
theory's sound)...
