The main problem here is the enormous improvement in distribution systems
for hackers... It used to be that protecting yourself from 99.99% of people was
enough to make sure that 99% of people didn't have access to a hacked version.

This is unfortunately no longer the case... If you're not convinced - do a copernic
search of 'Hacks cracks warez serialz' and you realise how prolific the hacking
world has become - and it's no longer the realm of those that can't afford the
software being forced down that path, the hackers are even selling the software
at 'special discount rates' probably making a tidy profit along the way...

To be honest those that were never going to purchase in the first place are
welcome to the software - the thing that irks is those making a profit without
the effort - it is unfortunate that it is the 0.01% that most protection schemes
don't protect from that are forming these types of enterprise.
