Its not quite what you want, but one I've seen something like this done is
to actually send the browser a multi-part/mime html file, with the image
encoded as the second part, and in the first, you hame <img
src="some-ref-to-the-other-mime-part">....   usually done wiht HTML email
stuff, but I see you're wanting a link to, not an inline image... mmm,
pass :)
