Depends on the ORB you use. Visibroker runs on a lot of platforms (v3.4
does Linux, NT, Solaris I think)(, but if you write it using Visi for 
Java, the app will run anywhere that has
a JVM (almost - palm is too cutdown), BUT you need a box in the above list
to run the smart agent - but you only need 1 copy of this somewhere on
your subnet.

so yeah, they are very much still platform independant. BTW, Visi is built
into Netscape, so if you are looking at using applets (not a good idea
tho), you have the client end of the orb there already.
