1) Make sure you have a valid boot disk handy
2) Go ahead & try it

You probably won't be able to rename them as they will be in use but if you
did, Windows is going to not get very far.

Of course you could try other windows tricks like install Win95 with the Win
311 program manager (or file manager) as a shell. 

In fact why stop there? Why not boot from floppy then try 'format c:/'.  All
you need then will be  a Linux install set - which are cheap... <g>
