I had similar problems with a friends connection, but this was with Win98
but you might find it useful.
First off you have to make sure the DNS settings are correct. I then
installed the standard 56k modem driver, which seemed to work better than
the K56Flex one supplied with the modem.
Also he had several phones on the same line and found that if he
disconnected (Pulled the plug out of the socket) of the rest of the phones
when he was on the Internet it helped quite a bit.
Try someone else other than xtra. I used to be with them and found that they
were too slow. I changed to my current ISP and have found it to be faster as
well as alot cheaper.

Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: Internet connection
This is REALLY off-topic and I hope that it is OK to post here.
I'm having real problems sending and receiving emails and 'surfing the
net'.
The problem is on two different computers, using two different internal
modems, whether I am using Netscape or Outlook Express. I'm using NT4
on both SP5 on one and SP6 on the other.
I can dial in OK and get connected at a reported line speed. But most
of the time (not always) when I then go to send Email I get a message
saying "couldn't find server smtp.xtra.co.nz" When I go to pick up
email I get "Couldn't find server pop3.xtra.co.nz".
I have had the problem for several weeks but this morning it got so bad
that I had tried at least 15 connections to Xtra and still couldn't send
an email.
By the way, since I am using NT, Xtra don't want to know. Their
Helpdesk suggested that I upgrade to 98!
Any suggestions of where to start would be GREATLY appreciated. (Let's
hope I can read them!!)
Mark
