thanks people - lots of good suggestions. End result was to replace the
server :) I was using the default Uni of washington "reference
implementation" of IMAP, and its broken badly (as Mark pointed out). I
replaced it with the much quicker and nicer courier-imap, and all is well
(all under Linux) - well, actually, all is a lot better, as I can make
folders and lots of other cool things.
