i'm 1 person here who doesn't know you, but even i know you
work for borland <g>

sure - ok. but not all software developed is software for sale.

a lot of software is written for internal use by developers
on staff (or hired from outside) and not sold as a product - just
used internally.

Delphi has always been great for this kind of stuff - and IMO
having Kylix as an option means Linux will now be in the running
as the platform of choice for internal apps where it might not
have been otherwise.

That means more commercial sites running Linux.

And that's good for everyone - including commercial developers
writing software for sale under the no-nonsense licence because
it expands the potential market for their products.

AFAIK the GPL wouldn't interfere with the development of internal
tools provided they weren't "distributed".

This is a legal technicality here that I wonder about (and hope someone
here knows about): The GPL http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html
refers to "you" the licencee and what "you" can/can't do under
terms of the GPL. In the case of a "company" my understanding
is that it (as a "juristic person") is the licencee and consequently
using the software inside the company wouldn't be "giving it to
another person" so the GPL stuff wouldn't get triggered.

There is a note sort of related to this issue on the Borland site
http://www.borland.com/kylix/k1/opedfaqs.html where they talk
about "... if you have a team of 5 programmers working on a commercial
product ...". I wonder will this same note apply if the team
of 5 programmers is working on a system the company will use
commercially (but internally) to make widgets? How about if
the company hires the team of 5 programmers?

yeah i know - off topic - should crosspost to
alt.programming.legalbs <g>

Anyway FWIW i'm glad to see this gutsy move by Borland.
