You get a tax free personal allowance of between 4000 & 7000 or
thereabouts, depending on your age and marital status, etc.

After that the tax bands are approx:
10% on first 2000
22% on next 30000
40% on everything else.

All figures in UKP.

Cost of living in UK is very expensive. I took around a 25% pay cut in
dollar terms moving to NZ 2.5 years ago, and probably still have
slightly more to spend on a monthly basis. A pint of beer will cost you
upwards of $10. A reasonable bottle of wine from the supermarket will
be upwards of $40.

They're talking currently about an average 20% rise in house prices in
the UK this year. It takes an average of 4 years just to save for the
deposit on a house, and the average house is now around 7 times the
average income, which makes it very difficult for first time buyers
since mortgage lenders work on lending around 3.5 times your salary.

Apparently London is now the most expensive place in the world to get
divorced too in terms of divorce settlements... ;-)

Cheers,

C.
