You get a tax free personal allowance of between 4000 & 7000 or thereabouts, depending on your age and marital status, etc.
After that the tax bands are approx: 10% on first 2000 22% on next 30000 40% on everything else. All figures in UKP. Cost of living in UK is very expensive. I took around a 25% pay cut in dollar terms moving to NZ 2.5 years ago, and probably still have slightly more to spend on a monthly basis. A pint of beer will cost you upwards of $10. A reasonable bottle of wine from the supermarket will be upwards of $40. They're talking currently about an average 20% rise in house prices in the UK this year. It takes an average of 4 years just to save for the deposit on a house, and the average house is now around 7 times the average income, which makes it very difficult for first time buyers since mortgage lenders work on lending around 3.5 times your salary.
