And also BHODemon, HijakThis and Spy sweeper.

 

I have found that after running two of these, the others can still pick up stragglers.

I've had no problems except that I have found that neither Ad-Aware nor SpyBot do the job on their own. I find that I need both to be sure of a successful clean up.  Be sure that you keep each updated!

 

It's still putting the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. I'd appreciate a suggestion as to a good filter to act as a fence.

Haven't experienced that (unless you mean that it's fairly processor hungry while it's running?), but I've found SpyBot Search&Destroy a better spyware tool personally, and generally seems as well regarded as Ad-aware.
