Expect grafted or cutting grown varieties that you buy from garden centres to start producing in 2 years from planting. Remove all flowers in the first year so that the plant can put all its energy into growing. Seed grown plants (and I don't recommend that you do this) will take 3-4 years.

Ross, you will most probably need to water and feed (use citrus fertiliser) the trees over the summer for them to fruit well. Also, you will need two different varieties for cross pollination. You can improve your soil by applying a 10cm layer of compost ($3.20 a bag from the big red shed) and then mulch with bark.

So far this year, I have collected over 20Kgs form my 4 small trees, and there is still loads of fruits on them.

Oh & I do have 2 fejoa trees but they do not provide very much fruit. Some years nothing. They are still a little young I think.at 8 years old. Or perhaps the soil is no good and needs some fertilizer.

I grew up with a hedge of 8 or so big mature trees and had a kilo a day I would say when in season.

7-8 years is about the time you should start expecting them to start fruiting. Too bad if you give up & rip 'em out before they reach that!!
