fyi: I wrote a little annual report for Advocacy so we are all on the
same page about where Advocacy is at this point in time. Hope it's
helpful for understanding this CG as the OGB evaluates overall
OpenSolaris CG issues. If the mail generates any conversation on
advocacy-discuss, I'll report that back at a future date. -- Jim

hey ... since I live at Sun and I'm used to chopping up the year into
fiscal quarters and doing reports and such, I figured I'd write one for
Advocacy while I was at it. I think it's a good habit to get into for
governance as well, so I'll send a link to the OGB so they know what
we're up to over here. I'm not perfect with stats or keeping track of
everything, but I think this is close enough to give a brief outline of
where we are and how we got here. Hope it's useful. Feel free to chip at
it and add stuff ... -- Jim G.

Advocacy Community Group Annual Report
FY08: July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008

The Advocacy CG grew substantially last year. It was created via a
merger of three old communities during the OGB's initial community
reorg. Advocacy also migrated the OSUGs from individual pages to be full
projects on the site. The CG merger and OSUG migrations took
approximately six months, and the process was entirely manual. About 10
OSUG pages were deleted in the migration process because they had been
abandoned, and more than two dozen new groups were added. Advocacy also
sponsored some non-UG projects and several additional lists as well.
Most lists grew in activity and membership. Aside from one shipment of
Sun materials to the OSUGs, all the activities in Advocacy were based on
community involvement and the growth was largely organic. Although the
vast majority of Advocacy traffic is based around OSUGs, Advocacy
members at Sun and outside Sun participate many dozens of Sun and
industry conferences around the world with technical and non-technical
presentations.

Advocacy Community Group

    * Created the Advocacy CG by merging the Marketing, Immigrants, and
      User Group communities.
    * Merged communities were deleted after the process was complete.
    * Merged community lists were archived and linked to from Advocacy.

OpenSolaris User Groups:

    * Migrated 53 OSUGs to new projects sponsored by Advocacy.
    * Deleted 10 abandoned OSUGs during the migration.
    * Added 26 new OSUGs for a total of 69.
    * Sent UG kits (shirts, hats, DVDs, bottle openers, etc) to 56
      OSUGs, which took several months.

General:

    * OSUGs: 69
    * OSUGs that have lists but have yet to open projects: 10
    * Non-UG projects: 3
    * Lists: 85
    * Membership of all lists: 5, 795
    * Best guess of list membership overlap: about 20%
    * advocacy-discuss subscriptions increased from 350 to 425.
    * OSUG list subscriptions increased from 3,000 to 4,858.
    * Advocacy Contributors: 7
    * Advocacy Core Contributors: 102
    * Conferences: Many dozens.

Needs/Goals: (just making these up off the top of my head)

    * Grow advocacy-discuss and the OSUGs.
    * Connect more of the global advocacy operations and get the content
      on to advocacy-discuss.
    * Editors to maintain pages (delete, add, update, etc).
    * News writers for the Newsletter.
    * Conference organizers to manage events on list.
    * More Contributors. We have too many CCs.
    * Add 28 Jive forum gateways for OSUG lists.

Sun Resources:

    * FY08: One global shipment of OSUG kits.
    * Planned for FY09: I don't know.
