No, your logic is flawed.  Granting membership is not the same as
taking it away, nor is expiration the same as resignation or
termination.  You are still a Member for two years or until you
resign the Membership, explicitly.  This is protected by the
constitution to prevent community groups from influencing the
community-wide vote by expelling core contributors with an
opinion contrary to to the group-local majority but matching the
community-wide majority.

This question has been answered more than once.  It is quite clear
in the constitution for anyone who isn't specifically annoyed at
reading a constitution in the first place.  If you want to resign
as a Member, then just resign as a Member.  If not, then don't.
Stop wasting time on meta discussion.
