Mental health is something we ALL value; it is also something that we all have to work at to achieve, because it does not come for free. A balanced life promotes good mental health; an unbalanced one does the opposite. I find I get grumpy (my wife's term) if I'm tired and hungry; eating and a nap tends to restore my ability to deal with stress (two teenagers /and/ dealing with PSARC!) Pulling all-nighters is a thing of the past for me - I find that I no longer am able to maintain a sharp mental focus after being awake for over 18 hours (some may claim I lose it much sooner :-), and that going for too long at work without some downtime tends to make me less productive. In my case, this tends to show itself as a progressive failure to deal with social interactions, less able to concentrate on details, and a degraded ability to empathize with others. In other words, I tend to offend people in my email because I don't understand how they can be such idiots :-) As a defensive measure, hopefully I've learned to "delete after writing" these types of email. Does this make me insane? No, but it does imply that my mental state changes just as dynamically as my physical one - and that it too needs to be managed so that I - as a holistic person - function at my best. I am looking forward to meeting you this weekend - in an environment that will allow us to relax a bit, to recharge our emotional energies, and to stimulate creative innovation. If it makes you feel better, call it an OpenSolaris Conference. Myself, I think of it as a mental health program. With beer :-) -John
