The project would be known as ADM. ADM, in conjunction with SMMS (a separate project proposal), will provide an archive/storage solution along with a next generation media manager for Sun's filesystems. These products are being designed and developed by Sun Microsystems Data Archive Group. Project Description: ADM is designed to use the Data Storage Management API (aka XDSM) as defined in the CAE Specification XDSM as documented by the Open Group. XDSM provides an Open Standard API to Data Migration Applications (DMAPI) to manage file backup and recovery, automatic file migration, and file replication. ADM will take advantage of these APIs as a privileged application and extension to ZFS. SMMS will provide true removable media resource sharing between applications (in this case, ADM). The tape library, drives and cartridge resources are no longer host-centric. Community Involvement: By open sourcing ADM software, we will enhance OpenSolaris as a storage platform. Those that adopt OpenSolaris will benefit from an open storage platform, while providing valuable feedback during the development and deployment of these projects. We plan to develop our initial release of ADM in the Open Source community, so we invite community feedback on our designs in progress. We intend to make periodic code drops to the project page for download by the community. ADM is currently developed in Mercurial. Our long term strategy will be to use Mercurial as a source control tool and make the repository part of the open source project. This will allow the community to comment on features and our code base as we work through the design and development phases of ADM and allow for community contributions.
